    Artist Quotes

    Moderndragonfly's Blog

    image

”The seed of your next art work lies embedded in the imperfections of your current piece. Such imperfections (or mistakes, if you’re feeling particularly depressed about them today) are your guides – valuable, reliable, objective, non-judgmental guides – to matters you need to reconsider or develop further.”
    – David Bayles and Ted Orland, Art and Fear.

“The craving for colour is a natural necessity just as for water and fire. Colour is a raw material indispensable to life. At every era of his existence and his history, the human being has associated colour with his joys, his actions and his pleasures.”
    – Frenand Leger, “On Monumentality and Color”, 1943.

”Happy are the painters, for they shall not be lonely. Light and colour, peace and hope, will keep them company to the end of the day.”
    – Winston Churchill.

”The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over…

My First Night in San Francisco

    Shivaya Healing Arts

    (Written 1/30/12)

On the BART overlooking this beautiful city and mountains, San Francisco first started out as a challenge. Thank you so much to Amber Kennedy for the ride here, as well as the oncoming challenge and faith that I will pull through yet another one of the Universe’s tests. Pulling up to Hostelling International, I sat outside trying to figure out my situation. At first with credit card declining and unable to take the card over the phone… the Universe reached out her arms and with one more try, the transaction went through, giving me my own room for a night. Costly but life saving, the deskmen were overly hospitable, sympathizing with my situation and putting a smile on my face. Met a few people as well, one from Spain that immediately pointed out, “are you a DJ?” I guess I can’t get away with that anywhere can I?

5 Social Media Week DC 2012 Panels: Conversations, Politics, Technology, Public Diplomacy and eDemocracy

    digiphile

Social Media Week DC  is going to be a busy conference for me this year. If you haven’t heard about it yet, the week-long festival starts 12 days from now. The week will feature speakers, panels, workshops, events, and parties all across the District celebrating tech and social media in the Nation’s Capital, including a special edition of the DC Tech Meetup. I’m going to be moderating four panels and participating on a fifth. I’m excited about all five and I hope that readers, friends, colleagues and the DC community comes to one or more of them.

If the panels that I’m involved in aren’t your cup of tea, you might find something more to your taste in the full SMW DC schedule.

    Social Media Week DC 2012

Following is the breakdown of the five panels that I’ll be participating in this year:

More than 100 missing, feared dead after ferry sinks off Papua New Guinea coast

    National Post | News

    By James Grubel

SYDNEY – Rescuers plucked more than 200 people from the sea off Papua New Guinea on Thursday after a ferry sank, leaving more than 100 missing and many feared dead, Australian authorities said.

“This is obviously a major tragedy – 350 people on board a ship that has gone down,” Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard told reporters in Melbourne.

“It is likely a very high loss of life here.”

Australia’s Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) said 219 people had been rescued after eight vessels and three helicopters were diverted to the scene where MV Rabaul Queen went down early on Thursday.

AMSA spokeswoman Carly Lusk however said a greater loss of life may have been avoided as sea conditions were good, with a 10 knot (18kmh) wind and a light swell.

She said the ferry’s owners had reported 350 people on board the 47m coastal ship.

    “We are…

John A. Macdonald’s promise to natives not binding, court rules

    National Post | News

Canada’s First Nations cannot impose a modern notion of legal rights onto promises of the distant past to force land-claim settlements, a court ruled, declaring a 141-year-old government promise is not legally binding on Ottawa because it was absurd to contemplate at the time that natives could sue the government over such things.

The decision by the Yukon Supreme Court accepts Ottawa is not forced by past promises or relics of public policy to settle continuing aboriginal land claims.

“I agree with [the government of] Canada that the relevant provision in the 1870 Order cannot create an obligation to negotiate treaties and that Canada retains the discretion to decide if, when and how to negotiate, as a matter of Crown prerogative,” ruled Justice Leigh Gower.

    [np-related]

Court cases have long been accused of dragging on but few, even in Canada, are parsing legal references from its prehistory, including the Royal…
